How Good Are 3D Rudder Specs? Is This Feet-Controlled Virtual Reality Device Worth Your Money?

by Rupam D / Feb 23, 2016 09:31 PM EST

Every virtual reality device - existing and forthcoming - comes with controls meant to be operated using one's hands. But with 3D Rudder, the onus to navigate you through the virtual environment generated by the device lies on your feet.

Simply put, 3D Rudder specs are pretty decent, if not mind-blowing. It uses a standard accelerometer and gyroscopic technology to track the user's movement on the circular platform. Beneath the surface is a half-sphere that functions as a pedal and can be tilted in multiple directions.

The device requires a PC to function. Connectivity is easy and all you will require plugging in is the standard USB cable. Users can operate the 3D Rudder using a joystick, keyboard or mouse. It can also function in conjugation with the Oculus Rift headset.

The pedal platform can seamlessly work with existing PC games as well as design software such as Maya and ZBrush. Even though the device was originally targeted at gamers and 3D professionals in the fields of design and architecture, the developers believe that the 3D Rudder specs and features are simple enough for it to be embraced by the masses.

The device is 14.5-in in diameter, 3.15-in height and it weighs 4 lbs approximately. The maximum load it can handle is 286 lbs or 130 kg with the user seated on a chair.

The device activates automatically once it detects feet on the platform. The minimum system requirement of the 3D Rudder is a PC powered by an AMD Phenom or Intel Core i3, i5, or i7 processor; 2 GB of RAM, an active Internet connection and USB 2.0 port.

A companion software (downloadable) is available on the official 3D Rudder website.

Overall, it might feel a little weird for some users to adjust in this relatively unfamiliar territory of handling a device using their feet. However, beyond that, the 3D Rudder specs and features are good enough for them to be able to thoroughly enjoy this feet-controlled machine.
