'The Revenant' True Events: Leonardo Dicaprio Said No To The Most Disgusting Scene Despite Oscar Bid?

Many movie buffs who have seen "The Revenant" are quite interested to learn the true events that inspired the movie that could possibly win Leonardo DiCaprio a much coveted Oscar award.

It has previously been reported that DiCaprio's role on the "The Revenant" was based on a real-life person who lived in the 19th century, and the true events that happened to him after he was left for dead by his friends in the wilderness after being attacked by a bear.

TIME referred to a 1939 piece titled "The Oregon Trail" to retale the story that inspired the Oscar nominated movie directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu.

"In 1823, Glass joined a team led by Andrew Henry that traveled up the Missouri River and the Grand River in modern-day South Dakota," the article said. "It was during that trip that Glass was mauled by a grizzly bear."

"The book goes on to say that Glass' 'rage' at having been abandoned 'provided the vitalizing will to live,'" the article continued.

"Glass set off alone again and arrived at the Big Horn post, where he planned to enact his revenge, 38 days later."

Many may have cringed at the sight of Leonardo DiCaprio being mauled by a bear, disinfecting his own wounds through burning clumps of dried grass, eating raw animal liver, and using the body of a dead horse as a blanket. However, a report claimed that there was another gross scene in the true events of Hugh Glass' life that was left off from "The Revenant."

"Incredibly, he set his own leg, wrapped himself in the bear hide that had been the shroud left by the men who abandoned him," Daily Mail previously wrote about the real story of Hugh Glass. "And amazingly, he let maggots eat the dead flesh on his body as a way to prevent gangrene."

This part of the story may sound new to fans, as such a scene was not witnessed in the movie.

Were flesh-eating maggots left out in "The Revenant" because Leonardo DiCaprio refused to do such a disgusting scene?

Not quite. According to the actor, the real reason behind the absence of maggots in the movie was quite simple.

"Well, in the search to be authentic as possible, which is what we tried to do in this movie, there were no maggots in winter!" the Oscar nominated actor told Cinema Blend. "So this whole film was in a winter landscape, and there were no... well, there were flies, but there were no maggots."

Amidst the buzz about the true events behind "The Revenant," fans anticipately await the Academy Awards on February 28 to witness whether Leonardo DiCaprio will win his very first Best Actor Oscar.
