Tesla Motors, PayPal and Space X-founder Elon Musk's self-professed love and fascination with Mars is well documented.

This love for the red planet feeds his belief that not only is a manned Space X Mars mission inevitable, but it can be achieved within decades, giving him the opportunity to live the last of his days on earth's cosmic sibling.

Not just that, Musk also hopes that sooner or later humanity will build a "city on Mars" to establish a permanent presence there.

Admittedly that sounds more like the plot of some sci-fi novel or movie at this juncture.

However, Musk appears to be certain that the potentially game-changing rocket landing and recovery technology briefly demonstrated by Space X's Falcon 9 booster on Dec. 21 last year marked the beginning of the long but promising road ahead for humanity.

"I think this was a critical step along the way towards being able to establish a city on Mars," Musk stated shortly after the success of the Dec. 21 demonstration, as reported by the Universe Today.

In a related news, rumors have been swirling around within the aerospace community for awhile now that Musk could soon unveil an ambitious and rather expensive architecture for facilitating manned Space X Mars mission in the foreseeable future.

Reacting to those rumors, Musk told Ars Technica that nothing was imminent yet despite his plans to reveal further about Space X's roadmap vis-à-vis a manned Mars mission in the coming rendition of the International Astronautical Congress (IAC).

"I'm hoping to describe that architecture later this year at IAC ... and I think that will be quite exciting," he told the attendees of StartmeupHK last month.

Worth noting, humanity has been exploring space since the 1950s, but until only recently, national governments had the monopoly over space exploration and engineering.

But now, Elon Musk, alongside a few others, changing everything.

As many observers point out, the future of space exploration never looked brighter.
