'The Walking Dead' Season 6 Episode 9 Postmortem: Carl's Accident Will Reportedly Define His Character
"The Walking Dead" season 6 episode 9 titled "No Way Out" is deemed as one of the best of the show because of how close it was to the source material.
The AMC TV series returned after more than two months of hiatus and hardcore comic book fans were satisfied.
One of those scenes that appeared straight out the comics is when Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) lost his eye.
Just like in the comics, Rick Grimes' son lost his right eye and a chunk of his face because of an accidental shooting.
In the TV series, he was shot in the face by one of Jessie's son after witnessing her mother and brother get eaten by the walkers.
This scene in "The Walking Dead" season 6 episode 9 appear satisfying for many fans.
However, that is only the start as makeup guru Greg Nicotero said Carl's latest situation will change him forever just like his storyline in the comics version.
"In the comic book, the wound really defines who Carl becomes in subsequent issues and subsequent episodes," he told Entertainment Weekly. "So it was important, just like with Hershel or Merle. Those things happen, and they shape who that character is going to be down the line."
Executive producer Gale Anne Hurd called the Carl-scene big and believed they did it justice.
"It's one of those things where if you're an actor in the show and you're familiar with the comic book and there's the moment of iconic and life changing in the comic book, you're always wondering when it's going to happen," he told ComicBook.com in an exclusive interview. "It's obviously a big one and one that he was pretty enthusiastic about provided we did it right, which I think you agree, we did."
Other "The Walking Dead" season 6 episode 9 scenes fans found loyal in the comic book are the dialogue between Rick and a sleeping Carl, the individual shots of each character releasing their rage on the walkers, and the group's tensed walkathon while being surrounded by the brain-eating creatures.
"The Walking Dead" season 6 will return on Feb. 21 for an episode called "The Next World."
