Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller tapped to helm new Star Trek series

While fans, cast and producers have not given up on the idea of coming up with a season 4 of "Hannibal," the latest news may push the effort a little longer.

"Hannibal" creator Bryan Fuller has been tapped to act as showrunner for the revival of "Star Trek," a job he has long coveted.

"Bryan is not only an extremely gifted writer, but a genuine fan of Star Trek," CBS Studios chief David Stapf in a statement.

"Having someone at the helm with his gravitas who also understands and appreciates the significance of the franchise and the worldwide fan base was essential to us."

Aside from "Star Trek," Fuller will also be busy with the TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman's novel "American Gods." He got the said gig shortly after news have confirmed that "Hannibal" season 4 will not happen.

With his new role in "Star Trek," the 46-year old screenwriter and producer expressed his excitement over the project.

"My very first experience of Star Trek is my oldest brother turning off all the lights in the house and flying his model of a D7 Class Klingon Battle Cruiser through the darkened halls," he said according to Gizmodo.

"Before seeing a frame of the television series, the Star Trek universe lit my imagination on fire. It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand-new iteration of Star Trek with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman and boldly going where no Star Trek series has gone before."

According to Alex Kurtzman, the "Star Trek" revival will be more about bringing the show back to its roots.

"Bringing Star Trek back to television means returning it to its roots, and for years those roots flourished under Bryan's devoted care," Kurtzman told Entertainment Weekly.

"His encyclopedic knowledge of Trek canon is surpassed only by his love for Gene Roddenberry's optimistic future, a vision that continues to guide us as we explore strange new worlds."

With that said, news about "Hannibal" coming back for season 4 may not be in the cards yet.
