‘Facebook Killer’ Faces Life Imprisonment For Allegedly Killing Wife In 2013
A Florida man is now faced with life imprisonment for allegedly killing his wife and posting a photo of her dead body on Facebook in August 2013. Yahoo! News reported Saturday that 33-year-old Derek Medina was found guilty by a Miami court on Friday for allegedly shooting his wife, Jennifer Alfonso, two years ago.
Medina, after committing the fatal crime, posted a photo of Alfonso on Facebook and said: "I'm going to prison or death sentence for killing my wife, love you guys, miss you guys, take care Facebook people."
"You will see me in the news my wife was punching me and I am not going to stand anymore with the abuse so I did what I did I hope u understand me," Median added.
Judge Yvonne Colodny imposed the penalty of life imprisonment against the suspect. Medina allegedly admitted to authorities that he did in fact commit the killing, but only because Alfonso threatened him with a knife during an argument. The jury, however, refused to find his claims meritorious.
Colodny told the suspect through his Facebook post he was able to foretell his future, ABC News noted Friday.
"You wrote on Facebook that "I am going to prison." And that is where you will belong," Colodny said.
Meanwhile, Assistant State Attorney Scott Dunn said evidence proved that the victim tried to protect herself. Alfonso was found "cornered like an animal" in the kitchen of their home.
Dunn added that another factor that aggravated the crime was Medina's act of posting the photo of the crime on his social media account.
"It wasn't enough that he had to take an innocent person's life. He had to make a spectacle out of it," he added,
On the other hand, Medina alleged that he was not given a fair trial and vowed to appeal the judgment.
"I didn't get a fair trial," Medina told the judge. "God knows the truth, and nothing further."
