Panasonic Revives Technics SL-1200 Turntable; Specs And Price Details Released!
Panasonic revealed the specs of its revived Technics SL-1200 turntable at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
According to the BBC, two models of the iconic turntable were unveiled, one of which is limited to only 1,200 units, marking the hardware's first update in years.
The upcoming model will reportedly feature massive improvements on the turntable's mechanical specs.
Panasonic has updated the SL-1200G with a new motor, which is designed to be quieter and less prone to shakes and vibrations than previous models. This results in, the company claims, better quality of sound.
Meanwhile, the 50th-anniversary limited edition Grand Class SL-1200GAE will be machined from magnesium instead of aluminum, and will have a badge with its serial number on it.
The updated specs, however, won't come cheap.
According to The Verge, the 50th-anniversary limited edition Grand Class Sl-1200GAE costs $4,000.
The SL-1200G however, will presumably be cheaper although the Panasonic has yet to reveal an exact price.
In 2010, Panasonic disappointed many vinyl collectors when it decided to halt production on the famous turntable line following a decline in vinyl sales.
"They had a fantastic brand with a huge heritage," What Hi-Fi Magazine editor Andy Clough said.
But late last year, the Japanese electronic manufacturer announced that Technics was making a comeback.
"From our point of view [the re-launch is] really exciting, it's a sort of update if you like on an iconic turntable - something of a legend amongst DJs and hi-fi people," he added. "It's still very much a niche thing - albeit a growing niche."
Stay tuned for more on the specs of the new Technics Turntable as information becomes available.
