'Captain Marvel' Casting: Emily Blunt Still In The Running To Play Carol Danvers
"Captain Marvel" has been the center of casting rumors since the project was greenlit in 2014. Several A-listers have since been linked to the project, namely Rebecca Ferguson ("Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation"), Natalie Dormer ("Game of Thrones"), Katheryn Winnick ("Vikings") and MMA champion Ronda Rousey.
Another star heavily favorited by fans to play Carol Danvers is "Edge of Tomorrow" actress Emily Blunt. But why is it that her name keeps getting linked to the Marvel tentpole film? The 32-year-old "Sicario" star has a good explanation.
"I think it's because the list is very short, because we don't see women in these kind of roles. So I think as soon as you do a role like that, like Charlize did or I did, or Rebecca's done - there's like four of us or something. And Jen Lawrence. " Blunt said in an interview with Screen Crush. "So I feel like us four, we get talked about - and Angie, Angelina. So it's a list of like, four women who are going to be considered for those kind of roles."
Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige and producer Jeremy Latchman also weighed in on Captain Marvel's casting.
"When a cast list comes out, we look at it" the Marvel Studios boss told MTV.
"We read it, we go through it, we read the comments, we look at who people like," Latchman added. "Sometimes it's really enlightening. Sometimes it's the exact same person that they've been saying over and over that we don't think is right."
While nothing has been set in stone yet, it's worthy to note that Marvel acknowleges "fan castings." Several actors were also linked to "Doctor Strange" until "Sherlock" star Benedict Cumberbatch, a fan favorite, was cast as the movie's lead.
Blunt admits that she was never approached for the role, but with Marvel's history of unlikely castings, there's still a chance that she'll headline the studio's first female-led outing.
