Is Dakota Johnson's role in the upcoming sequel "Fifty Shades Darker" threatened with the arrival of a new character?

Variety confirmed that Kim Basinger has been signed up for the role of the highly anticipated Mrs. Robinsons in the second installment of the "Fifty Shades of Grey" series.

The recent speculations suggest that Dakota Johnson may be threatened because of the 62-year-old's entry in the upcoming movie sequel as Elena Lincoln aka Mrs. Robinsons.

It is rumored that the 26-year-old actress will face a tough competition from Kim Basinger's character for the BDSM scenes.

"In addition to being a key figure from Christian's past, Elena is also a potential romantic foe for his current girlfriend, naïve heroine Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson)," claimed Access Hollywood.

Based on the novel Mrs. Robinsons is a former love interest of Christian Grey, who will make things harder for Anastasia Steele.

Dakota Johnson's character may reportedly feel sidelined and unwanted in the upcoming movie "Fifty Shades Darker."

According to Entertainment Weekly, Kim Basinger's character will play a very important role in the plot of the sequel's story.

Apparently, Dakota's character will discover the hidden truth that Lincoln introduced the concept of BDSM to Christian Grey.

Furthermore, New Zealand Herald reported that Elena's history with Christian's family will also be revealed in the upcoming movie sequel.

In addition to Dakota Johnson, Jamie Dornan and the recently named cast Kim Basinger, Luke Grimes, Max Martini and Eloise Mumford are reportedly joining the upcoming sequel to the movie adaptation of E.L. James' erotic novel.

Following the exit of Sam Taylor-Johnson, James Foley is set to direct the film with story adaptations from her husband, Niall Leonard.

The sequel "Fifty Shades Darker" will be released on Feb. 10, 2017.
