As fans have been anticipating about "Friends" reunion in 2016, recent reports might have just shut down their hopes.

In an interview with Us Weekly on Sunday at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour in Pasadena, California, following the panel for her Netflix series "Grace and Frankie," the NBC show's co-creator Marta Kauffman disclosed that the cast are coming together soon but it is definitely not for a reunion project like a movie or a reboot.

"I will be there, but it is not a 'Friends' reunion," she pointed out while adding that the get-together will be in honor of legendary TV director James Burrow, who "directed 15 Friends episodes, including the pilot, which aired in September 1994."

In the said "Friends" reunion of sorts, five of its cast members are expected to appear, while one cannot make it on the special airing of the tribute for Burrows on Feb. 21.

"Jennifer Aniston (Rachel), Courteney Cox (Monica), Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe), David Schwimmer (Ross) and Matt LeBlanc (Joey) will all take part, while Matthew Perry (Chandler) is unable to attend, as he will be working on a play in London," the report shared.

Kauffman further noted that she is happy in doing a new project that somehow reflects the good points about "Friends," even without a movie or reboot coming in 2016.

"For me, why go back to that territory again?" she said. "I get to do [on Grace] what I loved about Friends, which is, make a show that's got some hope and joy to it and explore something completely new.

It can be recalled that the series aired its final episode in 2004, after a decade of enjoying high ratings.

In the meantime, it can be recalled that the last time the "Friends" cast members had a reunion, prior to special show for Burrow, was in August 2014 at the "Jimmy Kimmel Live," according to the Variety.
