‘Narcos’ Season 2 Spoilers: Cast Weigh In On “El Chapo” Arrest, As Penn Denies Role In Capture
As fans eagerly await for spoilers of "Narcos" season 2, the recent re-arrest of drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman is giving them more reason to tune in to the crime series featuring the life of Pablo Escobar.
According to Extra TV, the arrest of de Guzman was a hot topic of discussion among the cast members of "Narcos" at the Golden Globe awards, wherein the show was nominated for best drama.
Wagner Moura, who portrays Escobar in the hit Netflix series, reacted to the news of Guzman's arrest, as he drew parallels between the lives of the Mexican and Columbia drug kingpins.
"It's so crazy, I didn't expect to see Sean Penn, it was such a crazy story... El Chapo is in prison again, I think this is a good thing...," Moura said in an interview for "Rolling Stone."
"I think a show like 'Narcos,' which is a show about the birth of the narco trafficking... It's proof, the war, the drug war is a big flop," he added, providing greater context to "Narcos" season 2.
For his part, Pedro Pascal, who plays DEA agent Javier Pena, stated that the recent turn of events was "Almost stranger than fiction, as soon as you see something you can't believe is true..."
"...we have the proof in archival footage, these last 24 hours are proof of that as well in terms of everything that is happening with El Chapo."
In a separate interview with CBS News, actor Sean Penn talked about his highly-controversial encounter with "El Chapo," denying that the meeting was instrumental in the drug kingpin's re-capture.
"There is this myth about the visit that we made, my colleagues and I with El Chapo, that it was -- as the Attorney General of Mexico is quoted -- 'essential' to his capture," Penn told CBS.
"We had met with him many weeks earlier...on October 2nd, in a place nowhere near where he was captured," he added.
"Here's the things that we know: We know that the Mexican government ... they were clearly very humiliated by the notion that someone found him before they did," Penn continued.
"Well, nobody found him before they did. We didn't -- we're not smarter than the DEA or the Mexican intelligence," he explained. "We had a contact upon which we were able to facilitate an invitation."
With Guzman's capture, interest in "Narcos" season 2 is further building up, as the series' followers remain on the hunt for more spoilers.
