‘Simple Song Number 3’ By South Korean Soprano Sumi Jo Is Nominated for Best Original Song For The 2016 Academy Awards

The Grammy Award-winning South Korean soprano Sumi Jo has been nominated for Best Original Song in for the 88th Academy Awards. The ceremony will be held in Hollywood on Feb. 28.

Best known for her interpretations of the "Bel Caanto" repertoire, Jo is the first South Korean to be nominated for an Oscar award.

Korea Herald reported that Jo won bagged a nomination for her song "Simple Song #3," which is featured in the film "Youth." Jo also stars as herself in the movie.

Jo was raised by an amateur singer and pianist. She enrolled for  piano lessons at the age of four. When she reached six years old, Jo took up voice lessons. She began her career as a soprano singer in 1986 after she made her European operatic debut in Vierdi's "Rigoletto."

"Simple Song #3" was written by concert composer David Lang, and was also nominated for the Golden Globe Award under the same category. According to The Korea Times, this is the first Academy Award nomination for Lang.

Other nominees for the award are "Earned It," sung by The Weeknd for "50 Shades Of Grey"; "Manta Ray," sung by J. Ralph & Sia for "Racing Extinction"; "Til It Happens To You," sung by Lady Gaga and co-written by Diane Warren for "The Hunting Ground" and "Writing's On The Wall'" sung by Sam Smith for "Spectre," Yonhap News Agency asserted.

Meanwhile, "Writing's On The Wall" by Smith won the Golden Globe for Best Original Music. Music Wall reported that the song became the second successive Bond song to receive an Academy Award. The first song was Adele's "Skyfall," which claimed the honor in 2014.

Also, the documentary "Amy" by Amy Whinehouse and "What Happened, Miss Simone?" by Nina Simone are both vying for Best Documentary. Reports show that "Straight Outta Compton" has been nominated for Best Original Screenplay.
