Free Accessible Game Creation Tool, Core, Is Expanding to iOS And Mac
Core, a free computer platform that lets you create and play games, is expanding to iOS and Mac this summer, according to an announcement by developer Manticore Games last Friday. The app is currently available only on Windows from the Epic Games Store, so the move to Apple's platforms could mark a significant expansion for Core.
The platform from San Mateo, California-based company Manticore Games is built over Unreal Engine, a game engine developed by Epic Games. Engines are a general name for the various tools developers use to create and manipulate the aspects of a 3D production such as visuals, sounds, and physics. These can be applied to all sorts of video games or films.
Core functions as both a game-construction kit and a playing destination. It features thousands of free-to-play games such as shooters, survival games, MMORPGs, platformers, and party games. There are a variety of explorable worlds and characters to choose from
The playable programs are designed by a global community of developers using the platform. Users can "gain access to hundreds of free, high-quality music, sound, and art assets, and built-in 3D modeling and terrain-sculpting tools."
Core's hit its one-year anniversary last Friday of availability on the Epic Games Store (as an Early Access), and there are already more than 50,000 playable "games, worlds, and events" to check out, according to a press release. Crossplay will also be enabled between the iOS, macOS, and Windows versions of Core, and developers who want to start preparing their experiences for mobile can begin working with a "suite" of iOS optimization tools.
Other apps that tap into the metaverse have released fresh updates. Meta announced that it's working on web and mobile versions of Horizon Worlds, currently only available on its Quest VR headsets. Meanwhile, Roblox, which is already available on PC, Mac, mobile, Xbox, and more, is hiring a PlayStation engineer, suggesting that the hugely popular app could eventually come to Sony's consoles.
