After four years of waiting , "Attack on Titan" Season 2 finally premiered last April 1 but fans were surprised to learn that the much awaited anime will only have 12 episodes compared to its predecessor which had 21 episodes and several specials. Fans were wondering what could have been the cause of of the shorter season and attributed it mainly to the loss of materials to continue the story.

According to a report by Moviepilot, even before the "Attack on Titan" Season 2 airing, rumors have been rife that Funmation was waiting for the manga to come up with new materials.  And while fans would want the anime to faithfully stick to the events of the manga, the series is making their own call on some key events that may prove to have an impact  on the outcome of season 2.

Based on a report by CP, Sasha Blouse was supposed to die in a final stand against the Titans in the manga but the anime chose to save her.  Series creator Hajime Isayama in an interview said that Sasha was supposed to die when she faced a Titan in her hometown. However, he was swayed when editors of the manga asked him to save her.

Meanwhile, could the reason for the shortened season be due to the fact that Levi will have a spinoff anime that will focus on his backstory? The spinoff will reportedly revolve around the story of Levi during his early days in the Undergound District when he was still working together with a group of robbers. The spinoff series will be based on the No Regrets spinoff manga. An OVA adaptation was also released based on the manga.

"Attack on Titan Season 2" may also focus a lead in to the spinoff by introducing leads to Levi's backstory, according to some rumors. The anime can be streamed via Crunchyroll and Funimation.
