U.N. Chief Says That There Is A Great Tension At Korean Peninsula

The U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said there is a great tension at the Korean Peninsula which is greater compared before.

Ban Ki-moon also encourages the Security Council, which is assigned for creating peace and security resolutions, to have unity and to show their opposition about the nuclear and missile tests through sending a courageous message to North Korea.

Ban Ki-moon is a South Korean national who was elected as the secretary general of the United Nations in the year 2006. He is the 8th secretary-general and currently leading the United Nations. Before being elected as the secretary-general, Ban had a career in the South Korean government and held positions as a cabinet member in South Korea and in the United Nations.

 "The level of tension on the Korean peninsula has gone much, much higher. Never in the past I have seen such kind of heightened tension on the Korean Peninsula," Ban said during a news conference.  

"So it is very important that the United Nations Security Council should be united and take urgent actions to prevent, first of all, the provocative actions by DPRK (North Korea)," Ban added.

Moreover, during the news conference which marks the opening of the U.N. General Assembly, Ban was asked if he has any plan on traveling to North Korea in order to stabilize the tension between South Korea and North Korea. Ban responded that he don't have any plans at this moment.

 "Of course, I will continue to do until the last day of my term as secretary-general as much as I can to reduce, first, tension and resolve this issue. But we will see what I can do. But I do not have any plan at this time of taking any initiative," Ban said.

As a secretary-general, Ban aims to promote peace between the two countries. Aside from the Korean peninsula tension, Ban is also facing different issues around the world which concerning the United Nations.
