The release date for the sequel to Bungie's hit online first person shooter role playing game "Destiny" has now been fully set in stone after initial reports of the date first surfaced earlier this year, meaning Guardians may now mark the new year 2017 to hop on the hype train for "Destiny 2."

Bungie confirmed the 2017 release window for "Destiny 2" in Edge Magazine, as shared by Reddit user Mercules904 on the community website. Mercules904's opening post indicated that the developer team behind "Destiny" spoke with Edge Magazine regarding the upcoming "Destiny: Rise of Iron" expansion, which is set to be the third and final of the major content updates in the game's post-release development cycle.

Initial indications of "Destiny 2" releasing in 2017 initially surfaced in the first half of this year, when publisher Activision held an earnings call that also revealed their planned schedule of releases for the titles in their intellectual properties. More recently, a later Activision earnings call revealed that majority of the staff at Bungie is actually working on the sequel instead of the upcoming "Rise of Iron" expansion according to a Twitter post shared by Kotaku editor Jason Schreier earlier this month.

The spate of "Destiny 2" updates for August kept rolling, when a digital artist released some concept art allegedly created for the sequel. The images were promptly taken down by the artist, but several page screenshots and copies of the images still float around on the Internet.

Going back to the reconfirmation of the sequel's release date, Mercules804's post carried some tidbits of the interview between Edge Magazine and Bungie. It was clarified that "Destiny 2" was indeed pushed back to 2017 after initial plans slated it to release sometime this year, with Luke Smith taking the helm in the sequele's development.

The sequel's release was pushed back, contrary to Activision's usual practice stringently adhering to initially planned dates, to better avoid a mess like the one that tarnished the first year of the original "Destiny." With "Destiny 2," the developers are hoping to keep the release process smoother which they believe is more possible due to the easier transition between titles in the same franchise unlike the first one where the team moved straight from developing the "Halo" series.

It was also revealed that "Rise of iron" was not actually planned at all, but pushing back the release date of "Destiny 2" meant that there would be a significant drought of content until the sequel actually arrives. As any MMO player knows, having a long break between content updates in a franchise or game can cause people to lose interest in playing.

Aside from the 2017 timeframe, there is no specific release date as of yet for "Destiny 2."
