Super Junior Wins at Teen Choice Awards
South Korea's entertainment industry has reached international acclaim, and an addition to its list of global artists is Super Junior. The male idol group, under SM Entertainment, has won the 'Choice Music: International Artist' at the 2015 Teen Choice Awards.
Held at the Galen Center in L.A., the event celebrates achievements in film, television, music, fashion and several other industries. Each has numerous categories like Choice Movie: Comedy, Choice TV: Action Series and Choice Music: Country Song. It has Summer categories as well, such as Choice Summer: Movie and Choice Summer: Song. There are non-traditional categories too, such as Choice Hottie (male) and Choice Comedian. The winners, chosen by 13 to 19-year old voters, get a full-size and graphic-designed surfboard.
This year, the awards show has a new category - Choice Music: International Artist. The nominees are 2NE1, Girls' Generation, Super Junior, Little Mix, One Direction and 5 Seconds of Summer. And the group that has come out on top is Super Junior, beating chart-toppers 5 Seconds of Summer and One Direction - male groups who have a huge teen following all over the world.
In 2014, there was a Choice Web: Choice Fanatic Fans category. This has become Choice Fandom this year, and the winner is Super Junior's official fan club (or fandom) - E.L.F., which stands for Ever Lasting Friends.
With K-pop gradually becoming a mainstream genre internationally, it doesn't come as a surprise to find that three groups - Girls' Generation, 2NE1 and Super Junior - have been nominated in a famous awards show.
The chance to beat popular artists, like One Direction, has been one of the biggest achievements of Super Junior after debuting in 2005.
