John Anderson, the country singer behind "Swingin'," "Straight Tequila Night" and "Seminole Wind," died Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 71. His family announced the death on his official social media accounts and said he died in his sleep, WKRN in Nashville reported. No cause of death has been made public.

The family said they were "completely heartbroken," according to Country Now, and added that his greatest legacy was the love he gave them, TMZ reported.

Anderson was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2024, in a class with Toby Keith and James Burton, and attended this year's Hall of Fame Medallion Ceremony on Sunday, Oct. 18, three days before he died. Tim McGraw was inducted that night. It was Anderson's last public event, Yahoo reported. He posted a photo from the evening with other Hall of Famers and said he'd had a "great night." He last performed about three months ago, playing "Swingin'" on "Larry's Country Diner."

Anderson was born Dec. 13, 1954, and grew up in Apopka, Florida, before moving to Nashville soon after high school. Over a career of nearly five decades he had 20 top 10 country hits, five of them at No. 1, and released 22 studio albums, from his self-titled debut in 1980 to "Years" in 2020, Variety reported. "Years" was made with producer Dan Auerbach.

"Swingin'" won the Country Music Association's Single of the Year in 1983, the year Anderson also took the CMA Horizon Award, according to MusicRow. After a slowdown in his career, he returned to the spotlight in 1992 with "Straight Tequila Night," released through BNA Records, Country Now reported. He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014.

Tributes came from across Nashville. Blake Shelton, who sang on Anderson's "Tuesday I'll Be Gone," paid tribute, as did Reba McEntire and Luke Combs, who wrote, "Rest easy John." McGraw shared a photo of himself with Anderson from the ceremony. Kyle Young, CEO of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, called Anderson a one-of-a-kind song stylist.

Days before his induction in October 2024, Anderson told Rolling Stone what he valued most about the honor: "I got to live to see it."
