Taylor Swift VMAs 2026: Most Wins Ever, Video of the Year
Taylor Swift left the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards with three trophies and the all-time record for most VMAs won, closing a night otherwise dominated by Madonna's return.
What happened
The ceremony was held Sept. 27 at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles and aired on CBS, MTV and Paramount+. Swift won Video of the Year for "The Fate of Ophelia," lead single from her 2025 album The Life of a Showgirl. She also took Best Direction for "Opalite" and received the first-ever MTV VMA Artist Director Honors, a new award for artists who advance music-video storytelling behind the camera.
"The Fate of Ophelia" beat videos by Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars, GENER8ION, Madonna and Sabrina Carpenter. Swift entered the night tied with Beyoncé at 30 Moon Persons, according to several outlets, so all three wins put her ahead.
The Dolly Parton tribute
Swift dedicated Video of the Year to Dolly Parton, who died in August at age 80. She called Parton "the ultimate showgirl" and said the country legend's storytelling was "so vivid and so rich." She added: "I think that we were all very lucky to share this planet with Dolly Parton for a time." Kacey Musgraves performed "I Will Always Love You" earlier in the show in Parton's honor, CBS News reported.
A new video, and Madonna's night
Swift also premiered a video she directed for "Patient Zero," one of four new songs on The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore. It stars Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell.
Madonna made her first VMAs appearance in more than 20 years and won seven awards, including Artist of the Year. She performed "Bring Your Love" with Sabrina Carpenter and "Danceteria" with Charli XCX, and won Best Collaboration for the former. Only Madonna won more trophies than Swift on the night, though BTS also took three awards, all of them handed out outside the main broadcast.
