David Bowie's Death Mourned By The Public As Legend's 18th-Month Battle With Cancer Ends
David Bowie, the legendary musician who carved his name in the house of the rock gods, died at the age of 69 after 18 months of battling with Cancer. Following news of his death are messages of grief from fans all over the world.
According to a statement posted on David Bowie's official Facebook account, the singer-songwriter "died peacefully."
"David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer," read the statement, dated Jan. 10. "While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family's privacy during their time of grief."
During the "Starman's" 40-year career, he made a mark in different music genres such as glam rock, dance pop, punk, funk and electronic music.
Creating his alter ego, Ziggy Stardust, Bowie's breakthrough album came in 1972, entitled "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars."
He also revealed then that he was gay, although some speculate that it was a publicity stunt.
"This is audacious stuff right down to the stubborn wispiness of its sound," said rock critic, Robert Christgau of the musician's album.
"Bowie's actorly intonations add humor and shades of meaning to the words, which are often witty and rarely precious, offering an unusually candid and detailed vantage on the rock star's world," the critic added.
He also played eclectic characters in different films such as in "Just A Gigolo," "The Last Temptation of Christ" and "The Man Who Fell To Earth."
A few minutes after news of David Bowie's death broke out, fans all over the world expressed their grief on losing one of Hollywood's most influential musicians.
"Sad for the loss of icon #DavidBowie; an artist & musician who pushed the boundaries & sent the pulses to create the avande garde," a Twitter user wrote.
"Genuinely shocked to hear that #DavidBowie has died," another fan said. "He played a big part in my musical life. Musical and artistic genius."
"Energy can't be created or destroyed: he's simply gone to the stars to sing and shine," said another Ziggy fan.
David Bowie's death was caused by cancer, a disease that he battled for 18 months.
