The motoring world was quite shocked when German automaker BMW decided to put a V8 into the M3 E92 instead of the more traditional straight-six engine.

Experts on the matter believe that there are at least three reasons that could justify BMW's decision to equip the E92 M3 with a V8 engine.

Based on its official specs list, the BMW M3 E92 is easily the most powerful car in the M3 family to date. The fourth generation car is a huge leap compared to the previous generation M3 E46 for several reasons.

The first two reasons being more powerful and very lightweight.

According to BMW Blog, BMW designed the M3 E92 to be significantly lighter and faster which makes it very appealing not only to casual owners but also to car enthusiasts. Aside from sporting an extremely lightweight body, the E92 also has a powerful engine which was tweaked for optimum performance.

BMW was able to shed the weight of the M3 E92 by opting to choose a lighter weight-saving front bumper, exhaust system and carbon fiber roof. Company engineers have found out that they can significantly shed the weight of the car by using carbon fiber roof, and that is what they did.

The third reason is the addition of two more cylinders.

Upgrading from the common straight-six engine to the robust V8 means that the car has two more cylinders to power it. This is the first time an M3 car would house a V8 engine and it appears that the decision by BMW to do so has paid off exponentially.

By integrating a V8 engine, the car's power was pumped up to 420 horsepower.

According to Torque News, the BMW M3 E92 4.0-liter V8 engine is a beast. It can reach 62mph from zero in just 4.4 seconds.

The new M3 E92 fourth generation cars are available in convertible, sedan and coupe models.
