‘Ant-Man’ Tops South Korea’s Box Office For The Second Week In A Row; Remains Ahead Of Local Film ‘The Veteran’
The Marvel film "Ant-Man" finished at number one for the second week in a row at the South Korean box office. Local film "The Veteran," which is set to have a sequel from Director Ryoo Seung Wan, ranked second, ahead of "Avengers: Age of Ultron."
Distributed by Walt Disney Company Korea, "Ant-Man" accounted for 40.8 percent of the Sept. 11-13 revenue as reported by the Korean Film Council's KOBIS database. The Hollywood Reporter noted on Monday the second week's market share was slightly lower than the first week's debut as 45.7 percent, still and all the blockbuster movie has earned a total of $16.8 million.
The Hollywood Reporter also noted in their article on Sept. 6 the first week of "Ant-Man" at South Korea's box office earned $9.2 million from Sept. 4-6 putting an end at the reign of the CJ Entertainment title, "The Veteran," which is now the ninth best Korean film of all time.
For the second week, "The Veteran" took 21.8 percent of the total market share earning a gross total of $82.8 million. The movie has also reached over 12.5 million admissions surpassing "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and becoming South Korea's seventh most-watched film in the local box office.
The Hollywood Reporter also noted on Monday in order to determine the performance of films, local industry observers utilize attendance records and the titles that have garnered at least 10 million admissions is accounted to just over a dozen, comparable to a fifth of South Korea's total population.
Other titles joining the top five rank for the second week at South Korea's box office include crime thriller "Deep Trap" by Invent Stone at number three, accounting for 9.4 percent of the weekend's market share and earning a total of $1.4 million.
Coming in at number four is Next Entertainment World's "The Beauty Inside" with 6.9 percent of market share and grossing $13.2 million. "Assassination" comes in at fifth place with 4.6 percent market share and earning a gross total of $83 million.
