South Korean-born American actor Daniel Dae Kim will develop the film adaptation of the 2008 South Korean memoir titled "Escaping North Korea: Defiance and Hope in the World's Most Repressive Country".

The film was based off the true experience of North Korean defector Mike Kim, who is also the writer of the memoir.

"Escaping North Korea" tells the story of how Mike helped North Koreans escaped to China through a modern-day underground railroad after tensions emerged between the North and South Korea.

Deadline noted on August 26 that "over the course of his four years in Asia, Mike Kim would end up aiding thousands of people of all ages find safe haven through his humanitarian missions."

The Morning Call reported on September 1 that Daniel and his family moved to Bethlehem Township in Northampton County, Pennsylvania from South Korea. In 1986, he finished his secondary education in Bethlehem Township's Freedom High School.

Meanwhile, reports reveal that the film adaptation of the memoir is part of Daniel's contract with CBS Television Studio, in which the Hollywood actor agreed to develop programs for the said broadcasting company.

Daniel's production company, 3AD, will also partner with Sriram Das' Das Films for the production of "Escaping North Korea" which will be released as a full-length feature film.

Be Funny Studios founder and co-CEO Chris Lee will be the producer of the film adaptation, while Haroon Saleem is on board as the film's the executive producer. 24-year-old actress Rosalind Ross has signed up to join Daniel in this project.

Daniel Dae Kim currently stars in the American drama series "Hawaii Five-O" where he plays the role of Chin Ho Kelly. The CBS series premiered in 2010 and will begin its sixth season on Sept. 25.
