A recent research from the University of Texas demonstrates that increased sugar consumption could heighten the risk of Breast cancer and Lung Cancer.

The research was carried out in mice by increasing levels of fructose and sucrose comparable to that of western dietary intake. It was found that the impact of the sweet ingredient resulted in inflammatory pathways that caused cancer.

"We determined that it was specifically fructose, in table sugar and high-fructose corn syrup, ubiquitous within our food system, which was responsible for facilitating lung metastasis and 12-HETE production in breast tumors," Said Professor Lorenzo Cohen of Palliative Rehabilitation & Integrative Medicine in University of Texas, as cited by AOL.

Around 30 percent of Mice that followed a starch-based diet had measurable tumors after a period of six months, but around 50-59 percent of mice that followed a sucrose-enriched diet had developed mammary tumors by then.

Previous researches has studied the role of Sugar consumption in the development of breast cancer, but this is the first time ever to study to look at the direct effect of it in animals. This has been published in the online issue of Cancer Research.

According to Huffpost, the assistant professor of Palliative, Rehabilitation, and Integrative Medicine at the University Of Texas, Peiying Yang has released a statement.

"We found that sucrose intake in mice, comparable to levels of Western diets, led to increased tumour growth and metastasis, when compared to a non-sugar starch diet," he said. "This was due, in part, to increased expression of 12-LOX and a related fatty acid called 12-HETE."

It was also determined that it was specifically fructose, among table sugar and high-fructose corn syrup, common within our diet, which was responsible for facilitating lung metastasis and 12-HETE production in breast tumors. The data also suggested that increased dietary sugar consumption induces 12-LOX signalling that increases risks for the disease development and metastasis.

Since the study was published, sugar consumption has been decreased to those worried about having breast cancer.
