LG Doubles Its Lineup of OLED TV Displays in Korea

by Dana Marie / Jul 28, 2015 11:13 PM EDT

LG is outdoing itself as the company launches five new models in South Korea, doubling its existing lineup of premium OLED TVs to 10. The announcement came ahead the expected rollout of the same series in the U.S. next month.

What makes these additions different is the absence of curves. Instead, the display technology is in flat design - like traditional TVs, but better because it's OLED. This current collection will include 55 and 65-inch models with LG's trademark Art Slim Design, but slimmer. In fact, a 55-inch model has a thickness of only 4.88mm. Four models will feature 4K UHD resolution and one with 1080p resolution.

Rubbing your hands in excitement and can't wait to get your own OLED TV?

Know that not all these features may be present in the units that LG will roll out in the U.S. For one, it has announced it won't roll out models with 4K UHD resolution. Expect that there will be differences, including prices, between the releases in South Korea and other countries. As for U.S. pricing, the company will provide details in the next few weeks.

LG has stated that it anticipates around 600,000 OLED sales in 2015 and 1.5 million in 2016, with more production in the process. It might just reach the target, considering that other major electronics companies aren't focusing on the technology yet and its only competition is Samsung.

If you're wondering what makes this technology worth buying, check out its features and benefits on this page. Learn about its difference from LED display as well. As a note, it's mostly beneficial to digital cameras, mobile gadgets and smart devices, which require higher brightness and contrast as well as more saturated colors.

Generally, OLED TVs cost thousands and it looks like prices aren't going down just yet. Consumers who are interested in owning a model but can't afford the hefty tag might have to wait for (more or less) five years, when the technology is finally commercially viable.
