The debate about which series is better than other series will always continue, but it's always easy to quantify success.

That is to say, if you care about popularity and sales, then one series will always outshine others.

That appears to be the case for Hajime Isayama's "Attack on Titan" manga series, which has recently been crowned the highest selling media franchise in Japan for the year of 2015. It's of note that "Attack on Titan" managed to surpass another wildly successful franchise, "One Piece."

Anime News Network reports that "Attack on Titan" media sales for 2015 totaled 7,308,359,519 Yen (about 60.8 million U.S. dollars). The media sales counted in the report from Oricon include manga, novels, music, and home video releases. "One Piece" boasted 7,190,781,309 Yen (or 59.7 million U.S. dollars) in media sales for 2015.

The media sales specifically did not include games, film tickets, digital downloads, or other related franchise material, but it's certainly no secret that "Attack on Titan" is everywhere. This year marked the release of highly anticipated "Attack on Titan" manga volumes 16 and 17, and the special "Attack on Titan: Colossal Edition" volume two.

Though the "Attack on Titan" manga and the various adaptations that were released this year continue to garner attention, the "Attack on Titan" season two release date continues to be the highlight of interest for fans of the series. Unfortunately, nothing has been revealed about the release schedule save for some time in 2016.

Considering that Wit Studio, the animation production company behind the "Attack on Titan" anime, has already slated a brand new anime for early in the year, there's a good chance season two won't be seen until late in the year.

Whatever the case may be, it's clear that "Attack on Titan" continues to be one of the most popular series in Japan.
