Mozilla Firefox Mobile OS Stopped? Company To Focus In Enhancing Thunderbird?
Mozilla announced on Tuesday that they will stop integrating Firefox OS into smartphones.
Mozilla's senior vice president of connected devices, Ari Jaaksi said, "Firefox OS proved the flexibility of the Web, scaling from low-end smartphones all the way up to HD TVs," according to PCWorld.
"However, we weren't able to offer the best user experience possible, and so we will stop offering Firefox OS smartphones through carrier channels," the statement continued.
Mozilla Firefox mobile OS was first released in 2013 and got an updated version in November for Android platform before its development was put into stop. Despite the decision, they will still continue to find new ways to enhance its functionality and tools that were designed for low-cost handset.
Jaaksi shared, "We are proud of the benefits Firefox OS added to the Web platform and will continue to experiment with the user experience across connected devices," according to Tech Crunch.
"We will build everything we do as a genuine open source project, focused on user experience first and build tools to enable the ecosystem to grow," the statement continued.
Firefox OS had gained investment from mobile manufacturers like Huawei, Alcatel LG and ZTE however, there was allegedly no app developed specifically for its platform that could have strengthened their partnership. Mozilla hasn't revealed any future plans for the system after they stopped producing it into smartphones, according to VentureBeat.
The company's decision to out Firefox OS mobile integration on halt claims to be the tough competition between Apple and Android. This decision had resulted Mozilla to shift their focus from mobile apps into developing a system that supports HTML 5.
Mozilla Firefox mobile OS borrows its codes from the browser and Gecko applications system to its pages. It's ran by Linux's main core while its interface uses a technology called Gaia.
As of the moment, Mozilla diverted their business into enhancing their email and chat client, especially Thunderbird, one of the company's core application. The company aims to enhance the systems that build their reputation to cater all users' needs.
