Donna Karan's 1973 Abortion Addressed; Memoir 'My Journey' Out Now!
Top fashion designer Donna Karan opened up about her abortion in 1973, Friday, in a live interview with HuffPost.
Donna revealed the decision in her new memoir, "My Journey."
Karan made the difficult decision the same year the landmark Supreme Court case, Roe versus Wade, legalized the procedure.
"We weren't sure whose child it was and I said, 'I can't even fathom doing this,'" she said. "And then abortion had just been legalized. It was that week."
While Donna was still married to then former husband Mark Karan, she was having a full-fledged affair with artist, Stephan Weiss, revealed the New York Daily News.
Donna Karan met Weiss while she was planning her engagement party and slept together. After the designer's honeymoon in 1973, they continued to see each other. Weiss was also married at that time.
"I told Mark about it and I said, 'I really think this is what I have to do,'" the legendary designer continued. "And he agreed with me and supported me completely on it."
Mark Karan knew about the affair, and Donna promised she would end her relationship with Weiss after the abortion.
In 1974, the designer and Mark welcomed daughter, Gaby, but the marriage officially ended when Donna admitted she was still in love with Stephen in a therapy session.
"Confusion, passion, sadness, love, guilt - I cycled through those feelings all the time," she writes. "Yet I couldn't and wouldn't give up Stephan, the center of my emotional turmoil."
Donna and Mark eventually divorced in 1978 and five years later, the designer married Stephan, reported Us Weekly.
Weiss passed away at 62 years old, in 2011 due to lung cancer.
The DKNY founder, who is now a mother of three children, did not mind sharing personal details about her life.
Karan said she wanted people to know that she is just like them, dealing with life's loves, passions and insecurities.
