Netflix’s Current Mobile Users In South Korea Hit 10 Million In February
The active mobile users of Netflix in South Korea had reached 10 million in February. With this number, it is said that 20 percent of the country's population is now availing its service.
It was the mobile data tracker IGAWorks that released the aforementioned data. To be exact, the popular video streaming platform currently has 10.01 million Android and iOS users. It was way higher than the 4.7 million users that were recorded in January last year.
In a recent report by The Korea Herald, the phrase "monthly active users" was referred to as unique users who interacted with the service at least once in one month.
Netflix is still considered as the most popular streaming site in South Korea. Reportedly, it even grew after releasing original trending content such as "Space Sweepers" and "Sweet Home." As of February, it is leading in the popularity list. Its closest local rival, Wavve, only has 3.95 million users. On the third spot was Tving, with 2.65 million users.
Last month, Netflix announced that it is planning to spend around 500 million dollars for original content from South Korea in 2021. Ted Sarandos, the chief operating officer, said that in the past four years, the streaming giant had already produced around 200 pieces of content from Asia.
The number of Netflix's subscribers is expected to rise amid the novel coronavirus pandemic. People are advised to stay at home, so watching videos online has been one of the most favorite things to do. In fact, Netflix already saw that the number of its unique visitors in South Korea increased from January to November last year. According to Nielsen Korea, the increase was a whopping 64.2 percent.
However, the competition will be tough for Netflix this year because of the much-awaited launch of Disney+, the flagship streaming service of Walt Disney Co.
