BLACKPINK follows Big Bang's Steps, Joins Them As Top Korean Acts On QQ Music
BLACKPINK has done it once again. The globally-known girl band has broken another record as they become the first female Korean artist to surpass 5 million followers on the Chinese streaming app QQ music.
In the history of QQ music, there have only been three Korean artists to have been able to gain a massive following in the app. These include YG's Big Bang and GDragon, and also top Korean boy band EXO.
This is massive news for BLACKPINK as the Chinese music business is one of the hardest to break into the industry. Garnering a massive fan base in China is a feat itself. YG has been trying to break the multimedia wall in China and was able to do it with Big Bang and GDragon's solo career.
QQ music is one of the three Chinese freemium music streaming app. It has been compared to Spotify and has been dubbed as "Chinese Spotify." The strict rules on multimedia in China have limited fans from accessing global artists. BLACKPINK's immense success on the app has Blinks very excited, as this will open new doors for the four-member girl group.
Currently, BLACKPINK is on a hiatus and have been given the freedom to seek out other sources of social media platforms. Because of this, BLACKPINK constantly trends in the news due to their fans' support and their success in the international music arena.
The band's "The Album" has been on the Billboard 200 for 18 weeks straight now, making them the longest-charting Korean female act. Furthermore, "The Album" has regained traction once again, jumping over 40 spots on its 18th week and charting at number 59 from 128 on Billboard 200.
BLACKPINK is also the second most-streamed Korean artist on Spotify this month, coming only second to BTS. They have held this spot firmly since the start of the new year.
