BTS Took Home Group Of The Year Award + Three More Trophies At The 2018 People's Choice Awards
South Korean boy band BTS has once again proven that they are one of the most popular celebrity and has the most powerful fandom today. The group emerged as a big winner in Sunday's 2018 People's Choice Awards after receiving four awards and winning all categories that they were nominated.
Amidst the backlash in the past days, BTS emerged as victors once again. The band's fans also called the ARMY, lifted the septet to the list of big winners at PCA after they grabbed the Group, Song, Music Video, and Social Celebrity of 2018 awards.
In the Group of 2018 category, BTS beat fellow K-pop group Super Junior as well as Twenty One Pilots, Panic! At the Disco, and 5 Seconds of Summer. For the Song of 2018, RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook's latest hit song "IDOL" scored the highest vote against Ariana Grande's "No Tears Left to Cry," Shawn Mendes' "In My Blood," Selena Gomez's "Back to You," and "I Like It" of Cardi B, Bad Bunny, and J Balvin.
BTS's "Idol" also won the Music Video of 2018 award against other nominees such as Selena Gomez's "Back to You," Ariana Grande's "No Tears Left to Cry," Childish Gambino's "This Is America," and Camila Cabello's "Never Be the Same." As for Social Celebrity of the year award, the septet is the only group nominated in the category. BTS took this category against Ellen DeGeneres, Chrissy Teigen, Taylor Swift, and Selena Gomez.
People's Choice Awards is an American award show that recognizes individuals or group, TV shows, and movies every year. The winners are voted online by the general public. See the full list of 2018 People's Choice Awards winners here.
BTS failed to attend the awards event as they are currently in Japan for their series of performances starting on November 13. BTS, however, sent a video message for their ARMY who made the four awards possible.
"We had such a blast touring America this last month and we can't wait to come back and see you guys. Shout out to the Army, thank you so much," the seven-member group said.
Last week, the "Fake Love" also won the Biggest Fans Award at the 2018 MTV European Music Awards in Bilbao, Spain. The recent recognition that BTS has received come amidst backlash on the band's performance with American singer Charlie Puth at the 2018 MBC Plus X Genie Awards. Members Jimin and V were particularly criticized, apparently, for their unstable vocals during the "Fake Love" collaboration with Puth.
Moreover, BTS has been the center of controversy over the weekend after a Japanese TV network canceled their live appearance in one of its shows. TV Asahi said they decided to cancel the appearance of the K-pop boy band at their Music Station show due to the T-shirt that Jimin wore back in August. The shirt features a photo of a mushroom cloud created by the atomic bombing in Japan, a photo of Koreans celebrating their country's liberation from Imperial Japan, and the phrase "PATRIOTISM OUR HISTORY LIBERATION KOREA."
