Actor Charlie Sheen Makes Announcement On Today Show During Interview With Matt Lauer

Charlie Sheen confirmed he is HIV positive in an exclusive interview on the "Today" show with Matt Lauer, Tuesday, according to BBC.

"It's a hard three letters to absorb. It's a turning point in one's life," said the 50-year old actor.

Ending days of media speculation, Sheen revealed he had a little over $10 million to keep people from announcing his illness to the public.

Sheen was diagnosed four years ago and told his friends his health status. The actor said his honesty led to extortion efforts and smear campaigns, according to Today.

"I have to put a stop to this onslaught, this barrage of attacks and of sub-truths and very harmful and mercurial stories that are about me, threatening the health of so many others that couldn't be further from the truth," said Sheen to Lauer.

Charlie Sheen relayed that he trusted the people in his inner circle and thought they would help him.

The former star of the sitcom "Two And A Half Men" recounted an incident where a prostitute took a picture of his retroviral medications and threatened to sell it to the newspapers.

Sheen said in the interview that he has released himself from prison by telling the truth and admitted that his alcohol and drug abuse was a bad decision.

Matt Lauer asked Charlie, "Have you, since the time of your diagnosis, told every one of your sexual partners before you had a sexual encounter you were HIV-positive?"

Sheen responded with a "yes" and added, "no exeptions," cited Daily Beast.

The actor does not know how he contracted the virus, and told Matt it was impossible that he had passed HIV to another person.

Robert Huizenga, Sheen's doctor appeared in the interview as well and said that the actor is healthy. Doctor Huizenga explained that the daily medication has been able to suppress the virus.

"Charlie does not have AIDS," responded Huizenga to rumors. "That's when the virus suppresses the immune system. He is healthy."

Charlie Sheen said he continues to take his prescribed medications daily and hopes the pressure coming from the media would ease now.
