'Outlander' News & Updates: Sam Heughan & Caitriona Balfe Talk About The Changes In The Intimate Attraction Between Sam & Claire In Previous Season
Outlander stars Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe shared some details about the strong attraction between their characters in the previous season of the Starz series. During the Outlander panel at the recent Emmys' For-Your-Consideration event, Heughan and Balfe reflected on their characters last season.
Heughan said his character, Jamie, and Claire (Balfe) remain the same people in the third installment, but they somehow changed towards each other because of the years that they were separated. Balfe echoed Heughan's remark.
Balfe said Claire is a woman "without intimacy," but her passionate side has been put aside in the early part of Season 3. The actress admitted that the Claire in the third season is totally different from the wife of Jamie that fans have watched in the first two installments.
"The whole passionate side of her personality she's had to completely put to one side. She sort of lives with the ghost of this man who changed her entire being. And so it's almost like Claire's two different people in this season," Balfe told the crowd of TV academy members. But when Claire and Jamie finally reunited, her passion returned.
"She's more reserved and is living as only half of herself, but when she meets Jamie again the layers come off slowly and she begins to open up," Balfe said (via Gold Derby).
It can be recalled that Claire finally reunited with Jamie in Season 3 Episode 6 titled "A. Malcolm." Claire showed to Jamie the photos of Brianna (Sophie Skelton) in the said episode and eventually shared an intimate moment after decades of separation.
The cast also discussed the famous "kiss of life" between Jamie and Claire in Season 3 finale. Heughan joked how Jamie was able to save Claire from drowning because of his character's "big set of lungs."
The Scottish actor was referring to the scene when Jamie dives down the ocean to save Claire's life when the boat that they were in was damaged by the hurricane while traveling the Caribbean Sea. Claire was submerged in the water with a rope around her, but then Jamie jumped in and passionately kissed her to give her air. The couple was eventually washed up together on the shore of Georgia.
The third season of Outlander is expected to earn nods from 2018 Emmys. The nominees for this year's Primetime Emmy Awards will be revealed on July 12. Last year, Outlander did not receive any nods from 2017 Emmys because its "hanging episodes" were considered as part previous eligibility period. But the series is definitely back in the competition this year as the whole Season 3 ran within the award-giving body's eligibility period of June 1, 2017, to May 31, 2018.
Meanwhile, Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe, and the rest of Outlander cast are currently filming Season 4 and expect to wrap up soon. The fourth season of the Starz time-travel drama is based on the fourth book in Diana Gabaldon's series of novels titled Drums Of Autumn.
