Benedict Cumberbatch 2018: 'Avengers: Infinity War' Star May Have Hinted 'Sherlock' Season 5 Release Date
The game is officially on for fans who are hoping to get a dose of their favorite deerhunter-wearing detective. The world is currently celebrating Sherlock Holmes Day, and it looks like Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have prepared something special for everyone who has been waiting for the Baker Street Boys' return. Although the creators of Sherlock repeatedly insisted that the new project is not a new installment of the series, Benedict Cumberbatch may have revealed a clue as to when the Sherlock Season 5 release date is.
It's no secret that Benedict Cumberbatch has no problem with reprising his role as the iconic Arthur Conan Doyle character. Steven Moffat has already confirmed that Sherlock Season 5 will happen in the future when the cast and crew are no longer swamped with their own projects. Not surprisingly, people have been searching for any clues about the show while trying to decipher the new "adventure" that is making the rounds on social media through the hashtag #thegameisnow. But is it possible that Cumberbatch himself offered a hint at when the series will begin production?
A new video, featuring the voices of Benedict Cumberbatch and Mark Gatiss as Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes, respectively, has been released in honor of Sherlock Holmes Day. The video titled "Intercepted Audio" reveals that the detective is currently away from England and has a delightful exchange between the brothers that involves the terms "a game of sardines" and "Sweden sends its regards." Naturally, fans began speculating that Cumberbatch has referenced his current work with Marvel Cinematic Universe films and indicated that he will return to work on Sherlock Season 5 once his schedule is less hectic.
The "Intercepted Audio" video may have also teased on Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman's MCU connection. Mycroft comments that "certain cells of the network have gone quiet" and asks if they happen to be with his brother. Sherlock states that he is alone and that his current project is "not an international game of sardines." Cumberbatch had previously spoken up about Freeman's opinion about Sherlock Season 5, stating that he disagrees with his co-star.
It is still unclear when Sherlock Season 5 will begin production, but it is possible that the show will resume once Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss finish work on their Dracula series. In the meantime, Benedict Cumberbatch appears in Patrick Melrose, which airs on Showtime every Saturday night.
