Hayley's whereabouts remain elusive in The Originals Season 5 Episode 4, prompting Klaus to resort to some rather drastic measures. In addition, a recently released trailer shows a mysterious box which could be central to the episode's plot.

The Originals Season 5 Episode 3 Recap: 'Ne Me Quitte Pas' Is All About Elijah

Elijah Mikaelson is one of the most well-liked characters of the series. Deeply loyal to his family, he is the type of person who would anything to protect them. Thus, when showrunners decided to devote the entire The Originals Season 5 Episode 3 to the character, his fans couldn't help but be happy for him.

However, they did feel a bit sad for Elijah at the same time. This mixed feeling is simply unavoidable. The Originals Season 5 Episode 3 addresses the seven-year time jump between Seasons 4 and 5, as viewed from Elijah's perspective. The only problem was that it was an Elijah without any memory of his past or who he even is, thanks to Marcel who previously compelled Elijah to forget "Always and Forever."

Without any memory to guide him, Elijah's only links to his past were his "E" emblazoned cufflinks, a note that simply read "Don't Look Back," and a hunger that just can't be sated with regular food. To fans, it almost felt like seeing two Elijahs superimposed on each other; his face is the same old Elijah, but he is without a memory to remind him of his duties to his family, and his personality has somehow changed.

"I just tried to drop every sense of duty," reveals actor Daniel Gillies, adding that he had to do some changes on how he portrays the character for The Originals Season 5 Episode 3. "There's something almost military about Elijah at all times, you know? He seems like a general and a strategist, and it just was time to dispense with that and explore what he would be if he was just a man."

This new Elijah instinctively knew that getting away from his problematic family and starting a new life is what's best for him. Thus, when Elijah rejected Klaus' attempt at a reunion, the act totally crushed the latter.

"It completely killed that hope," Joseph Morgan, the actor who plays Klaus, tells TV Guide. "I'd say [Elijah] devastated Klaus... That emotion and that decision is carried forward in the future episodes."

The Originals Season 5 Episode 4 Spoilers

The action heats up in the upcoming The Originals Season 5 Episode 4. Titled "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea," the synopsis hints that in the absence of any progress regarding Hayley's search, Klaus will get desperate. He will then proceed to take hostages from the three supernatural factions in New Orleans.

A recently released trailer for the episode suggests that a mysterious box might hold some very dangerous secrets. The trailer opens with Klaus asking Marcel what could be inside a small wooden box. When Marcel decides to open it, Ivy reacts with horror.

Unfortunately, the box's content was not actually shown. However, the latter part of the trailer shows a burning house and Marcel saying, "Whoever did this can't hide from me." What could Marcel's connection with that box's contents be?

The Originals Season 5 returns to The CW on Wednesdays. Stay tuned.
