Vikings Season 5's return is expected to feature the death of some of its major characters. However, in an interview with its showrunner Michael Hirst, he teased that it might not be the roles fans expect.

Hirst admitted to Radio Times that there will be "significant deaths" coming, but they will not be the major roles fans expect to take their final bows. One of the major roles that viewers think will bid goodbye is Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick).

As she now seems a broken woman because of her defeat in a battle, a number of fans believe she is going to die in the return of Vikings Season 5. "Not necessarily," the executive producer simply said.

Hirst understands that there are a lot of theories surrounding Lagertha's death. However, it seems like viewers are reading the "runes" wrong. There will be, indeed, a lot of changes going on in her life, but it doesn't mean that she will be exiting the show, or not.

Aside from Lagertha, her son, Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig), is also assumed to die in Vikings Season 5. With all the battles he has escaped and an execution he managed to avoid, he might meet his death in the History series' return.

Also, fans believe that Vikings Season 5 could be Ivar the Boneless' (Alex Høgh Andersen) final stint. In a middle of domination, harm might come his way as he leads his people to a battle.

Hirst promised in the previous season that he is going to stick to the history's storyline, Hidden Remote reported. In fact, Ragnar Lothbrok died in the same way he faced his death in history.

The showrunner also revealed that he is not afraid to kill off some major characters and remove some roles for quite a while. This is even proved with the surprising return of Rollo (Clive Standen) at the end of Vikings Season 5's first half.

So, instead of a death, some fans think that some characters are going to take their break. With that, the death Hirst teased might not come as a big surprise to the viewers anymore.

History has yet to announce the official release of Vikings Season 5's second half.
