'Supernatural' Crossover Will Be a 'More Adult' Episode of 'Scooby-Doo'

Scooby-Doo is Crossing Over with... Supernatural?!

"Supernatural" season 13 is set to have a crossover with the classic "Scooby-Doo" children's cartoon. Series co-showrunner Andrew Dabb shared some tidbits about the upcoming stunt on the day of the season premiere.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dabb recalled that the "Supernatural" has wanted to do a fully animated episode since the fourth season of the show. It never came to pass due to the complications of such a production shift. Until now, that is.

Dabb said that a call with Jeremy Adams, a screenwriter under Warner Bros. Animation, proved to be the key to making that dream come true. Adams was a writer for the Warner Bros. cartoon "Justice League Action" and had worked on 12 episodes of "Lego Scooby-Doo." Chatting with Dabb, he asked, "Why haven't they done a crossover with Scooby-Doo?"

Dabb thought that was a great idea and took it to the heads of Warner Bros. Animation. And after "Supernatural" was blessed with an early renewal for season 13, the show had the lead time to get an animated episode made.

WHAS 11 notes that the actors recorded their voices for the "Scooby-Doo" crossover a few months ago. Jared Padalecki said the script was "awesome" and described the experience as the fulfillment of a childhood dream. Padalecki had grown up watching the "Scooby-Doo" cartoon.

Details about the episode remain sparse at this time. Dabb did tell EW that it would not be a cartoon for kids. "It's not going to be an episode of Scooby-Doo with the guys in it," Dabb said. "It's more adult than your average episode of Scooby-Doo." Padalecki also hinted that we might get to see the Winchesters' Impala and the Mystery Machine race each other.

Padalecki added that he wanted to do more "Scooby-Doo" episodes. He jokingly suggested that he was up for a full season of that. While that's not likely, it is possible that the series will come back for a 14th season. Variety reports that the "Supernatural" season 13 premiere showed steady ratings for the long-running series.
