T-Mobile Offers Free Netflix, HBO Go And More; 'Binge On' Plan Announced!
T-Mobile introduced a new wireless subscription that offers free Netflix and other video streaming services for their customers.
During the company's UncarrierX event, they announced a new wireless plan that lets customers watch videos online without paying for any extra data charges. The company believes that the data allowance is mostly consumed in video streaming, according to USA Today.
The new plan is called "BingeOn" which will be available on Sunday. It includes 2GB of data allowance for $50 dollars a month compared to their current phone service plan of the same price with 1GB of data.
T-Mobile's new plan offer will work for about 22 video streaming services namely Hulu, Netflix, HBO Go, ESPN and other premium cable channels. However, customers are not entitled to a data-free charge if they're using Google's YouTube, Amazon Prime, Snapchat, Facebook and other broadcasting apps.
The CEO of T-Mobile, John Legere, said that the free video streaming offer will only be available for videos that has below 480p resolution, according to The Guardian.
T-Mobile's Chief Marketing officer also said that, "data is wasted because on smaller-screen devices, you don't need to get all that data to get a great picture." He added that higher resolution will be much appreciated if it's seen on large screen television, according to Daily Reporter.
Gartner Research Analyst, Bill Menezes had doubts whether other wireless companies will match a competition to T-Mobile's free Netflix and other video platform offer. "This has a potentially huge impact on T-Mobile's network," Menezes said in USA Today. "I see them waiting to see what type of impact it makes," he added.
T-Mobile's new wireless plan free services might violate the net neutrality rule set by the Federal Communications Commission, which were silent about the topic of "zero rating" that T-Mobile is doing as of the moment, according to The Guardian.
