South Korean Pianist: Sunwoo Yekwon Wins First Prize At The Prestigious Van Cliburn Competition
At the recently held 15th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Sunwoo Yekwon managed to grab the top prize for his exceptional performance and amazing skills. This is the first time; a South Korean pianist has managed to come out at the top in this prestigious event.
Sunwoo is a 28-year-old graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music. He was announced as the gold medalist at the event held in Fort Worth Texas. The event was held between May 25th and June 10th. Sunwoo played a composition repertoire that included the Dvorak Piano Quintet in A Major, op. 81 and Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, op. 30 to confirm his win.
Sunwoo Yekwon has made his country proud with his recent achievement. He has been appreciated by the music and art communities all over the world. Sunwoo has earned an award of $50,000 for his achievements in the field of music. He has also won three years' worth of career management, concert tours, and recording sessions as well.
The Van Cliburn event has been held since 1962 for pianists from all around the world, between the ages of 18 and 30. Pianists gather around from all parts of the globe and test their might against each other.
Daniel Hsu, who is a current student of Sunwoo Yekwon's alma mater, managed to clinch the third place at the Van Cliburn event. The Van Cliburn event is an International Piano Competition that was first held in 1962 in Fort Worth Texas. The show was hosted by the Van Clibburn foundation and initially took place in the Texas Christian University. In the year of 2001, the event was shifted to the Bass Performance Hall and is held in the honor of Van Cliburn. Van Cliburn won the first International Tchaikovsky Competition in the year of 1958.
