AMD Ryzen 5 has been expected to have a huge edge over its price competition ever since it was announced as a mid-range product. For $250, the Ryzen 5 1600X provides six cores and 12 threads of the latest micro-architecture from AMD, while Intel Core i5 gives four cores without no extra threads for the same price. While Intel Core i5, which is based on Kaby Lake, has an instructions-per-clock upper hand, it is very difficult to do when the competition has 200 percent more threads and 50 percent more cores.

AMD Ryzen 5 Provides More Threads And Cores

AMD Ryzen 5 sits between Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 3, and a step below the HEDT market that looks more at the mainstream users with more reasonable budgets. According to reports, it comes out to Intel processors that have been launched this year in terms of design.

However, while Ryzen 7 undercut the HEDT market by providing a similar performance for half the cost, Ryzen 5 could not do the same. Given that the midstream market is more price conscious, AMD launches Ryzen 5 at the same price, pointing to Intel in this area. Also, AMD tackles the midstream market with more threads and cores since it could not compete on price, ANANDTECH reported.

AMD Ryzen 5 Aims To Provide Significant Advantage For Users On A Budget

Based on reviews, AMD Ryzen 5 1600X and 1600 have a huge advantage in terms of core count and thread count over the Intel Core i5 processors. Considering its  6-cores and 12-threads on both of those parts, reports suggest that any application or workload that can use multi-threaded configuration will see an immediate upper hand on the AMD hardware. Also, with 50 percent more cores and 3x the thread count, programs like Blender and Handbrake are expected to excel on Ryzen 5 over Core i5.

AMD Ryzen 5 1500X, meantime, is priced at $189 and competes directly with the Core i5-7500 and Core i5-7400, and the most interesting of which is the 7500. While both have 4 cores, only the Ryzen has SMT enabled, which gives the AMD hardware an advantage in any multi-threaded capable software, PCPER reported.
