MAMAMOO

Recently, the four-member idol Mamamoo has faced a controversy that angered both the Korean and international fans. It involved featuring blackface in an attempt to portray a known international artist. However, the group and their agency were sorry for the act.

The video, which has infuriated many, includes the girls from Mamamoo who were dressed up as Bruno Mars and his backup men. Hwasa, Solar, Whee In, and Moon Byul were wearing blackface in the said misguided video. Koreaboo had talked to the girls and their agency, RBW Inc., to let them talk about their side of the incident.

Both of the girls and their label were terrified and apologetic especially upon knowing the cultural significance and the emergence of blackface.

"We are extremely sorry for our insensitive actions and use of blackface in our video while portraying Bruno Mars. There is no excuse for what we did and there are not enough words to explain how regretful we are. We are heartbroken to have hurt our international K-Pop fans so deeply," Mamamoo explained. "We love and care so much for all people of every color, race, sexuality, religion, and gender. We love all our fans and are so sorry to have hurt our fans in the black community."

Mamamoo also understood what caused the video to be attacked. They admitted that they've become ignorant and they really meant no harm for posting the controversial video.

The CEO and members of Mamamoo also understood why the blackface video has become offensive. Nobody on their side has attempted to argue or make excuses for their action. They also talked about apologizing personally to the fans and international black community.

While ignorance is frequently used for such incidents, it is important to be extra careful and help educate those who are in need. Racism is wrong, whether it is intended or not and fans should not defend their idols.
