Over 100,000 Batteries Recalled by HP

Due to the notice released by Consumer Product Safety Commission on Tuesday, HP has recalled over 100,000 lithium-ion laptop batteries for possible overheating. CPSC said these faulty batteries potential to overheat may result into fire and burns. In June, HP also recalled 41,000 batteries in the US.

Affected HP Laptops And Batteries

Not only HP is affected to the recall ordered by CPSC. Also brands Compaq, HP ProBook, HP ENVY, Compaq Presario, and HP Pavilion. These laptops with faulty batteries were purchased between March 2013 to October 2016 sold at prices ranging $300 to $1,700. The company said it is cooperating with the regulatory agency to resolve the issue.

Meanwhile, affected laptops come with bar codes starting with 6BZLU, 6CGFK, 6CGFQ, 6CZMB, 6DEMA, 6DEMH, 6DGAL, and 6EBVA. Laptops containing these faulty batteries were more likely purchased at Best Buy, Walmart, Costco, and Sam's Club. HP spokeswoman said that less than one percent of the total number HP laptops sold during the timeframe were equipped with affected batteries.

HP Batteries Should Be Removed Asap

According to notice, "consumers should immediately stop using the recalled batteries, remove them from the notebook computers and contact HP for a free replacement battery." Owners should only use these notebooks by plugging them into AC adaptors until they get battery replacements. HP representative released a statement to Fortune saying that the company will provide a replacement for each verified affected laptop for free.

Chairman of the commission Elliot Kaye said that consumers should never have to worry about their family being at risk over a battery-powered device in the first place. This is the main reason tech companies should modernize and improve their safety standards for batteries. It seems like Samsung is not the only company with battery issues. HP did not release a statement about what causes batteries to malfunction and create fire.
