South Korea is about to experience the winter's coldest weekend with the temperature expected to go down in as low as 13 degrees Celsius this weekend.

The country is likely to experience a negative 13 degrees Celsius this Sunday as reported by the National Weather Agency. Even in central regions, the temperature is expected to go as down as negative 10 degrees Celsius.

The cold wave the whole country is experiencing right now is caused by a low-pressure system approaching from Siberia as explained by the Korea Meteorological Administration.

Seoul is, in fact, about to experience the coldest weather this winter as the Seoul's mercury is expected to go down from negative 5.5 degrees Celsius to negative 7 degrees Celsius on Friday. This will even go as down as negative 9 by Sunday.

"As a high-pressure system that developed in China - which prevented the cold air from pushing into the nation - has weakened this week, the low-pressure system that developed in the north started to approach Korea with cold air," a KMA official explained.

"The cold front is expected to sweep the nation this weekend," he added.

This won't last long, though, as KMA said that the temperature will go back to normal next week.

"The warm air - developed in the area including the Bay of Bengal, the Tibetan Plateau, and mainland China - has been preventing the cold air from pushing into the nation so far," the KMA official said.

"Although the warm air layer has temporarily weakened this weekend, it will continue to be a 'barrier' blocking cold air entering into Korea throughout this winter," he added.

In relation to that, the agency is advising the citizens to mind their health as to avoid getting sick. It is also advised that houses will be checked as to prevent damages caused by the freezing weather.
