South Korean Political Thriller “The King” Sets Record-Breaking Movie Trailer

Jo In Sung and Jung Woo Sung's upcoming political thriller movie "The King" has set a new record for most viewed South Korean movie trailer.

On Dec. 1, "The King's" trailer was released on multiple online platforms like YouTube and Naver. Within a week since its release, the video has amassed over 7 million views as reported by Soompi. The film's distributor NEW stated that this sets a breaking record for a Korean movie trailer.

"The King" is a political thriller film that follows the story of two prosecutors who aim to wield absolute power. In their greed for power, the prosecutors have given up their sense of justice as they resort to using manipulation and deceit. This struck an impression to South Korean citizens who are currently celebrating the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye after the reveal of her corruption scandals.

"The King's" trailer became an even hotter topic when it featured the characters visiting a shaman, a clear parallelism to Park Geun-hye's political activities. According to NEW via Soompi, the trailer has been ranked as the most-watched movie clip on Naver and "The King" is currently regarded as the most-anticipated movie in the country.

Currently, South Koreans are reveling at the impeachment of Park Geun-hye. The nation's National Assembly has officially impeached South Korean President Park Geun-hye on Dec. 9 after six weeks of street protests and an approval rating that plunged to just 4%, as Time reports. To this, NEW and the whole of "The King's' production team expect that their movie will do great not only in its trailer but also at the box office.

"The King" is created under the direction of Director Han Jae Rim and will star Jo In Sung, Jung Woo Sung, Ryu Jun Yeol, and Kim Ah Joong. Jo In Sung, who plays the prosecutor, is also highly anticipated by fans as it is his first film in seven years following "A Frozen Flower."
