LG Uplus to Offer Free Smart Energy Meters

Last Friday, October 21, 2016, Korea's third largest mobile carrier, LG Uplus, together with the Ministry of Health and Welfare, launched a new charity program to help selected elderly. LG Uplus will offer free smart energy meters to chosen elderly living alone. Their main goal is to establish a social security network for these elderly.

LG Uplus and the Ministry of Health and Welfare are said to work with the Comprehensive Support Center for the Elderly Living Alone to make this charity program a success. LG Uplus will offer free smart energy meters by giving away 1000 Internet of Things (IoT)-based energy metering systems to chosen elderly who lives alone. Aside from the metering systems, the company will also shoulder the full expenses for the service and network for the next three years.

LG Uplus to offer free smart energy meters to provide the elderly security, especially those who live outside security network. This new IoT-based metering device doesn't only make checking electric consumption and expected charges possible, and in the process reduce energy expenses, but it also allows families and caregivers to monitor the elderly's safety. This is because these metering devices come with an alarm service that notifies the caregivers if the electric consumption is showing an unusual pattern.

Aside from providing security to the elderly, politicians and government officials also believe that this program is a great help to keep the elderly from being isolated from society. National Assembly Health and Welfare Committee Chairman Yang Seung Jo also believes that this social system will prevent the elderly living alone from dying of loneliness.

LG Uplus to offer free smart energy meters to 1000 beneficiaries. And these beneficiaries will be chosen from all over the country starting this November. This is expected to start providing the device and services starting in December this year.
