Museums Offer Free, Discounted Admissions in Celebration of Korea Art Week 2016

The Culture Ministry and Arts Council Korea have announced the celebration of the Korea Art Week 2016 from October 11 to 23. This is in line with the effort of creating synergy between the ongoing biennial events, art fairs, and exhibitions in South Korea.

Korea JoongAng Daily mentioned in a report that over 20 big art museums will offer discounted or free admissions, and five markets managed by artists will take place throughout Seoul.

During the Korea Art Week 2016, museums that will provide free admissions to the public include the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art's Seoul and Gwacheon branches; Soma Museum of Art at Olympic Park in southeastern Seoul; Suwon iPark Museum of Art in Gyeonggi province; Gyeongju Solgeo Art Museum in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang province; and Daegu Art Museum in Daegu City.

Museums that will have 50 percent discount on tickets until October 23 include Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art in central Seoul; Seoul Calligraphy Art Museum of the Seoul Arts Center in southern Seoul; Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art in Ansan, Gyeonggi province; and the Asia Culture in Gwangju City. Included in the museum which has 20 to 40 percent discounts are Art Sonje Center in central Seoul; Arario Museum's Seoul and Jeju branches; and D Museum in central Seoul.

The Gallery Weekend Korea 2016 exhibit will run from October 13 until October 16 at the NEMO space of the Blue Square Cultural Complex in central Seoul. The exhibition will offer free admission.

The Korea International Art Fair starts on October 13 as well at the COEX exhibition center in southern Seoul. The exhibition will run for four days and will highlight works from 170 galleries from 16 countries that include 11 galleries from Taiwan.

There are three major art biennial events happening now. The 11th Gwangju Biennale runs until November 6 at the Gwangju Biennale Exhibition Hall and other sites in the southwestern city of Gwangju. The 9th Media City Seoul biennale continues until November 20 at the Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA) and its branches in Seoul. Lastly, the 8th Busan Biennale will occur until November 30 at the Busan Museum of Art and at the Kiswire Suyeong factory.
