Jeju Island Expands Number Of CCTVs For Crime Prevention

The provincial government in Jeju Island plans to expand the number of CCTVs and surveillance cameras to deter crime in the island.

Closed circuit television (CCTV) is a security system used for assisting and supporting emergency management situations. The presence of CCTV cameras within an area reduces fear among people and gives them the feeling of being safe.

The move of installing hundreds of CCTVs in the resort island is for boosting the security and safety measures within the area due to the increasing number of crimes committed by foreigners.

According to the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, a total of 472 CCTVs will be installed next year in 105 areas which are considered as foreigner hot spots.

Originally, the project is scheduled to be finished by the end of 2019. However, some officials pushed the completion of the project due to the increasing crimes recorded by foreigners most especially the tourists from China.

According to the provincial government, they will install emergency bells in 90 public bathrooms around the region that will allow people to contact the police and authorities. Moreover, another 260 CCTVs and 41 emergency bells will be installed in 62 child protection zones in the island.

Recently, there have been a rising number of complaints regarding crimes in the resort and some people were asking for a tougher security system and border controls. A review of the existing visa waiver program was also requested by some concerned citizens in order to decrease the number of crimes committed by foreigners who visited the island.

The Jeju District Prosecutors' Office reported earlier that it has indicted seven Chinese nationals due to the charges of beating up a South Korean restaurant owner in the previous month.

Another male Chinese tourist was arrested on the month of September due to the charges of killing a South Korean woman who was praying inside a Catholic church.

Due to these major and minor crimes that occurred in the island, the provincial government was alarmed and they decided to implement the project of installation of more CCTVs within Jeju Island in South Korea.
