President Park Promises To Strengthen Earthquake Preparations in South Korea
South Korean president Park Geun-hye promised to strengthen earthquake preparations by equipping key facilities with nuclear reactors that will withstand earthquakes.
Earlier this week, an earthquake jolted South Korea that caused panic to many people due to the lack of preparation and guidelines when an earthquake hit the country.
President Park said at a cabinet meeting that she will assign officials to the regions hit by the earthquake who will record the details of the damages in order to reduce the inconvenience from the affected residents.
"I believe many people were surprised by the earthquake," President Park said during the meeting.
A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck the city of Gyeongju on Monday. Because of the strong quake, it was also felt from the nearby cities around Gyeongju. It was the biggest earthquake that struck the country. According to Seoul weather agency, two people had minor injuries due to the quake and many people were shocked.
According to some TV footage, there were cracks seen in the roads, apartment and building walls, and some house roofs collapsed.
Fortunately, there were no serious injuries and damages recorded after the earthquake. However, several aftershocks were felt by people throughout the night.
According to the chief executive, despite of the earthquake, South Korea will still continue to proceed with more effective actions against North Korea's nuclear provocations including the issue about the US missile deployment that aims to protect South Korea from North Korea's missiles.
President Park also mentioned during the meeting that South Korea will end the communist regime if it fires a missile. She is also protesting against the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system where she believes that it will make South Korea vulnerable from North Korea's mass destruction of weapons. Other opposition parties are also against the THAAD deployment and mentioning the tension between China and Russia.
Furthermore, the South Korean President stated and cleared that THAAD only targets North Korea.
