Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.- Here Comes The Ghost Rider
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is about to welcome the Ghost Rider.
The first image of the avenging hero has been released online. Season 4 of the ABC series debuts at the end of September with an episode aptly named "The Ghost."
The Ghost Rider's first look reveals newcomer Gabriel Luna in the new Ghost Rider costume.
The flaming skull-headed Marvel hero came to the big screen for the first time via Nicolas Cage whose portrayal had mixed reviews.
Gabriel Luna isn't playing Johnny Blaze though, instead the creators of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is basing their Ghost Rider from the recent Marvel NOW! comics, which uses Robbie Reyes as the Ghost Rider.
Robbie Reyes is new to the fans since most people know Ghost Rider as Johnny Blaze.
However, by using Reyes, Marvel evades any comparisons to Nicolas Cage's film and also gives the show a Latino superhero.
In the comics, Johnny Blaze got his powers after accidentally summoning Mephisto. Reyes on the other hand becomes the Ghost Rider when he is gunned down while trying to retrieve pills that cause physical transformation. He gets to be revived as the Ghost Rider.
Nonetheless, it is unclear how, exactly, Ghost Rider will fit into the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. series, but it's a smart move on the part of showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen Collider said.
Collider further speculates that "it's become increasingly clear that the feature film side of Marvel Studios has little to do with what's happening on the small screen, and so instead of developing minor tie-ins to the MCU, the ABC series is going its own way and introducing a popular comics character before the feature film side gets a chance."
Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns on ABC on Tuesday, September 20th at 10pm ET.
