Korean Movie ‘Tunnel’ Tops Box Office in Fourth Week

South Korean movie "Tunnel" tops the box office for its fourth weekend in a row screening according to the data gathered.

According to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), the official box office tally state agency for promoting homegrown and local films, the movie "Tunnel" reached an attendance of 146,647 viewers on September 3 and garnered 344,332 to its domestic total of 6,942,566 from Sept. 2-4 over its 25 days of release. Soon after its release, the film brought a consistent view count of approximately 50,000 viewers each day surpassing the 6 million mark by September 4th.

Tunnel surpassed the 6 million mark on Aug. 27, the 18th day of showing of the film and becoming the sixth film that reached the milestone this year in South Korea.  It has also topped the daily box office chart for a total of 26 straight days which recorded the longest period for any film that opened this year. Moreover, the film is expected to hit the 7 million bracket soon.

The film is directed by Kim Seong-hun and starring Ha Jung-woo, Bae Doona and Oh Dal-su. The film portrays the tremendous struggle of a car salesman who accidentally gets trapped inside a collapsed tunnel on his way home from work. His wife and the rescue team captain do everything to save him but they are confronted with politicians and people who do not want their development plan to be delayed due to rescuing a single person inside the tunnel who may have already died.

Meanwhile, the Hollywood action film "Mechanic: Resurrection" got the second spot with 273,928 viewers. The James Wan-produced American horror film "Lights Out" dropped to No. 3 on its second weekend with 240,919 viewers.

Furthermore, the Hollywood newcomer "Ghostbusters" garnered 215,506 viewers is followed by two Korean films "The Last Princess" and "Train to Busan," which respectively were seen by 100,708 viewers and 57,080 viewers got the fourth place.
